☀️ Clear Blue Sky
This is the weather most visitors dream about.
A deep blue sky, crystal-clear air, and the famous white villages glowing under the Mediterranean sun.
The sea becomes a beautiful combination of turquoise and deep cobalt blue, while the white buildings create the iconic contrast that Santorini is famous for.
For photography, I always recommend shooting early in the morning, between 7:00 and 10:00 AM, or from 5:00 to 7:00 PM before sunset.
During March, October, and November, I usually begin between 8:00 and 11:00 AM, when the light is softer.
The biggest challenge comes between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
At that time, the sunlight is extremely strong. Shadows become harsh, faces are more difficult to photograph naturally, and the contrast between light and shade increases dramatically.
A clear blue sky is perfect for Flying Dress sessions, marriage proposals, weddings, family photography, portraits, and drone photography.
🌤️ A Few Clouds
Personally, this is one of my favorite weather conditions.
A few clouds give the sky character.
Instead of looking empty, it feels alive.
The sunlight becomes slightly softer, shadows are more flattering, and skin tones look incredibly natural.
These are the days when photographs often have a cinematic, luxury feel without looking overly dramatic.
⛅ Partly Cloudy
This is where photography becomes exciting.
The light changes constantly.
One moment everything is softly illuminated, and a few seconds later, sunlight breaks through the clouds creating beautiful rays across the caldera.
These dramatic changes can produce spectacular photographs.
They simply require experience, patience, and perfect timing.
Sometimes I wait just a few extra minutes because I know the perfect light is about to appear.
☁️ Overcast Sky
Many people think an overcast day is bad for photography.
Honestly, that’s one of the biggest myths.
For portraits, overcast weather can actually be one of the best conditions you can hope for.
Clouds act like a giant natural softbox.
There are almost no harsh shadows.
Faces are illuminated evenly.
Every skin tone looks beautiful.
Flying Dresses move beautifully, and their colors become richer because there are no overexposed highlights.
Red…
Yellow…
Purple…
Emerald green…
Turquoise…
Every color looks vibrant and elegant.
The only downside is that the sky may appear gray.
On days like these, I focus more on the architecture, the caldera, the sea, and the incredible textures within the clouds.
🌫️ Fog
Fog is quite rare in Santorini.
When it does appear, it’s usually very early in the morning.
For me, fog creates mystery.
It transforms familiar places into something almost dreamlike.
The atmosphere becomes soft, quiet, and incredibly cinematic.
These are some of the most artistic photographs you can create on the island.
🌧️ Light Rain
Rain is uncommon during the summer season.
When it happens, many visitors worry that their photo session is ruined.
In reality, sometimes the opposite is true.
The white stone streets become glossy.
Beautiful reflections appear everywhere.
Transparent umbrellas add romance.
The atmosphere becomes calm, intimate, and completely different from a typical sunny Santorini day.
🌦️ After the Rain
These are some of my favorite moments.
The air becomes incredibly clean.
Visibility improves dramatically.
The colors become richer.
The sea looks deeper.
The sky often becomes more dramatic.
And if we’re lucky enough to see a rainbow over the caldera…
It’s one of the rarest and most unforgettable photographs Santorini can offer.
🌈 Rainbow
Rainbows are not common here.
But when one appears above the caldera…
It feels almost magical.
It’s one of those moments you never forget.
🌬️ Wind
Santorini is famous for its wind.
As a Flying Dress photographer…
I actually love it.
The wind gives life to the dresses.
It creates movement, elegance, and emotion.
Wedding veils become more dramatic.
Hair flows naturally.
Of course, every session requires adjusting the model’s position depending on the wind direction.
But when everything comes together…
The results are breathtaking.
🌊 Crystal Clear Atmosphere
After strong winds, the atmosphere often becomes incredibly clear.
Visibility can extend for many kilometers.
From the caldera, you may clearly see Thirasia…
Nea Kameni…
Palea Kameni…
The island of Ios…
And on exceptionally clear days…
Even Anafi on the horizon.
These are ideal conditions for aerial photography and drone flights.
🌅 Golden Hour
The final hour before sunset.
This is probably the most romantic light you’ll ever experience.
Everything becomes warm.
Soft.
Golden.
Skin tones glow beautifully.
Shadows become long and elegant.
This is the light that has made Santorini famous around the world.
🌄 Blue Hour
About twenty to thirty minutes after sunset…
The sky transforms into deep shades of blue.
The village lights begin to sparkle.
Luxury hotels illuminate their infinity pools.
The atmosphere becomes peaceful…
Elegant…
🌙 After Sunset
Even after the sun disappears, Santorini continues to surprise you.
Hotels glow softly.
Swimming pools reflect the evening sky.
Restaurants light their terraces.
The island feels quieter…
More intimate…
Almost magical.
🌋 Saharan Dust
During spring, warm winds occasionally carry fine dust from the Sahara Desert across the Mediterranean.
Although visibility becomes slightly lower…
Sunsets often become extraordinary.
Orange…
Deep red…
Purple…
Sometimes the sky looks almost unreal.
🌪️ Strong Meltemi Winds
During June, July, and August, the famous Meltemi winds can become quite strong.
For Flying Dress photography…
They’re often an advantage.
The dresses fly beautifully.
The movement looks natural and dramatic.
For drone photography, however, safety always comes first.
Wind speed must be carefully evaluated before every flight.
My Personal Recommendation
After photographing thousands of couples, families, weddings, and Flying Dress sessions in Santorini, I’ve learned one simple truth.
There is no such thing as perfect weather.
There is only the perfect light for the story you want to tell.
A clear blue sky creates vibrant, iconic Santorini photographs.
A few clouds add depth and elegance.
An overcast day produces soft, luxurious portraits.
After rain, the island feels fresh and dramatic.
Golden Hour is timeless and romantic.
Blue Hour creates pure cinematic magic.
And even the famous Santorini wind becomes part of the experience.
If you’re planning a photo session here, my favorite times are always early in the morning, between 7:00 and 10:00 AM, or in March, October, and November between 8:00 and 11:00 AM.
The evening, from 5: 00 to 7:00 PM, is equally beautiful, especially as the sun begins to set.
These hours offer softer light, richer colors, fewer visitors, and the relaxed atmosphere that makes Santorini truly unforgettable.
And that’s exactly why I love photographing this island—because every day, every season, and every sky has its own unique story to tell.
